The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is the story of one of the world's greatest sporting challenges. One evening in May 1945, a small group of Sydney sailing enthusiasts decided that their planned post-Christmas cruise south to Hobart would be more enjoyable if they made it a race. And ...so began the story of a contest that quickly became ranked among the world's premier offshore racing events - a race that demands both immense physical and mental endurance of the individual sailor along with the coordinated effort of a close-knit team. It's a challenge where one mistake can lead to defeat, while success can deliver national and international acclaim. In its 75th year, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has become an icon of Australia's summer sport, ranking in public interest with such national events as the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Open tennis and the Boxing Day cricket test. No regular annual yachting event in the world attracts such huge media coverage or public interest as does the start on Sydney Harbour. The 628-nautical mile course is often described as the most grueling long ocean race in the world. From the spectacular start in Sydney Harbour, the fleet sails through the Heads, down the south-east coast of mainland Australia, across the notoriously tempestuous Bass Strait, then down the east coast of Tasmania. At Tasman Island the fleet turns right into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River. The race is an around-the-clock challenge from the harbour to Hobart, and the whims of the winds, waves, tides and currents means that, for each crew, nothing is certain until the finish line is crossed. The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is the story of one of the world's greatest sporting challenges, an event where men and women from all walks of life are inspired and challenged by the beauty and power of nature.

I keep coming back to the light of Brisbane. If you are born into it, this palette of gentle pinks and oranges at dawn and dusk, the blast white of midday in summer, the lemon luminescence of mid-morning and mid-afternoon, you keep it with you, and measure all other light by it. ...If you live away from it, then step back into it, it is the first thing that tells you you're home. In this book, writer Matthew Condon rediscovers the city of his childhood. He may have moved away from Brisbane as a young adult, escaping a repressive government, but writes that he always had his city inside him. He returns after many years with his own family and finds the urge to trace the contours of this city that made him and discover the history of a place he thought he knew. Condon takes the reader on a unique personal journey, unearthing the city's history - sometimes literally - and painting a portrait of transformation from a sleepy capital city that's more like a big country town, to a vibrant, confident place, but one where time can still move slowly. Brisbane tells of a city of wooden houses where mango trees abound, where the serpentine river seems to be of the city and yet somehow not, where ghostly memories of demolished landmarks like Cloudland and The Bellevue Hotel hover and where the chime of the City Hall clock echoes through time and place. In a new Epilogue written for this edition Condon returns to the house he grew up in; standing and looking out from the verandah, the past collides with the present, but the view is as he remembers it. '...a beautifully produced guide to the city that also evokes the soul of the place and establishes the historical context.' - The Brisbane News 'Dismayed, enmeshed and enchanted by Brisbane, he has added himself to the long line of its eccentric rhapsodists.' - Peter Pierce, The Canberra Times 'One of the finest writers of his generation...Condon weaves forensic examination of the city's ever-shifting history through intimate personal

Kitty Flanagan has been locked in an industrial freezer in Western Australia, insulted about the size of her lady parts in Singapore and borne witness to the world's most successful wife swap in suburban Sydney. It's these valuable lessons from The University of Life that have ta...ught her so many things, including the fact that cliches like 'The University of Life' are reeeally annoying. In these funny, true stories, Kitty provides advice you didn't even know you needed. Useful tips on how not to get murdered while hitch-hiking, how to break up with someone the wrong way, and the right way, why it's important to keep your top on while waitressing, and why women between the ages of thirty-seven and forty-two should be banned from internet dating. Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies is a collection of laugh-out-loud, cautionary tales from one of Australia's favourite comedians. 'Finally, a book that doesn't tell you to stop eating sugar.' KITTY - CAKE ENTHUSIAST 'Shut your mouth Flanagan or you'll do fifteen in the freezer.' GARY - FACTORY FOREMAN 'I was hoping there'd be more about arson.' BERNIE - LOCAL FIRESTARTER

Just as every home is different, so is every dog. In this stunningly photographed book of architecturally superb houses - many of them architects' own homes - we see how the presence of a dog brings warmth and life to the most dramatic spaces. From mid-century raw brick to a pent...house apartment, gracious Edwardian to Scandinavian modern, from beach house to country retreat, there is always room for a dog or two. Seemingly oblivious to designer furniture, heritage considerations or serious design aesthetics, dogs can make themselves at home anywhere. In fact, the rooms in this book are all the more appealing because of their resident dog.

In an era of mobile phone addiction and ever-expanding cities, many of us fear we've lost our connection to nature - but Peter Wohlleben is convinced that age-old ties linking humans to the natural world remain alive and intact. Whether we observe it or not, our blood pressure st...abilises near trees, the colour green calms us and being in the forest sharpens our senses. Drawing on new scienti?c discoveries, The Heartbeat of Trees reveals the profound interactions humans can have with nature, exploring the language of the forest, the consciousness of plants and the eroding boundary between ?ora and fauna. Wohlleben shares how to see, feel, smell, hear and even taste your journey into the woods. Above all, he reveals a wondrous cosmos where humans are part of nature, and where conservation is not just about saving trees - it's about saving ourselves, too.

All aboard the Scomo Express as our hero pulls back the lid on the life and times of one of history's great leaders and humbly serves up -a steaming meat pie of everyman wisdom for the hungering masses. These are the unofficial chronicles of Scotty's first 18 months in his new ro...le as head honcho of the largest marketing firm in the country - the Australian Federal Government - as it unfolded, completely devoid of any self-aggrandisement, double-speak, sleight-of-hand or other dirty shenanigans played by the Opposition. Thrill as the man who put the Scotty into Marketing tells how he honed his Sharkies lovin', beer drinkin', God fearin', cap wearin', Daggy Dad alter ego and used it to such miraculous effect. Marvel at how he developed such classic slogans as 'The Bill Australia can't afford', 'I'm listening. I'm hearing. I'm doing', and the immortal 'If you have a go, you'll get a go'. Like an egg to the back of your head, you will be blindsided by the rush of adrenaline as the Boy from Bronte waltzes from the boardroom to the world stage, becoming besties with The Donald, all while keeping the Lucky Country lucky, the Newspolls honest and the Prince of Darkness from reanimating himself in the form of backstabbing Coalition aspirants. From the inner-workings of BORDERFORCE!., to what really happened at the Engadine Maccas, this candid, compelling and completely unofficial diary is your backdoor access to the halls of power. With all that sweat, blood and cheers, who wouldn't deserve a tropical holiday?
