Statistical analyses of the numbers, lengths, and orientations of fission tracks etched in minerals yield dating and thermal history information valuable in geological and geoscience applications, particularly in oil exploration. Fission tracks can be represented mathematically b...y a stochastic process of randomly oriented line segments in three dimensions, and this line segment model can describe and explain the essential statistical features of the data, providing a rigorous foundation for quantitative modelling and simulation studies. Statistics for Fission Track Analysis explores the line segment model and its consequences for the analysis and interpretation of data. The author derives the equations for fission track data and the theoretical probability distributions for the number, orientation, and length measurements of the tracks. He sets out the theory of fission track dating and through numerical examples, presents methods for analyzing and interpreting fission track counts. Later chapters address statistical models for situations in which samples contain mixtures of fission track ages. These methods, along with observation features of the various measurements, are illustrated by real examples. Finally, the author brings together the theoretical and observation aspects to formulate a joint likelihood function of counts, lengths, and angles as a basis for parametric thermal history modelling. An appendix provides general notes on statistical concepts and methods. Designed for broad accessibility, this is the first book to fully cover the statistical foundations of fission track analysis. Whether you work in a fission track lab, in archaeological, geological, or geochronological research, or in geological applications of statistics, you will find the background material and practical tools you need to optimize the use of fission track analysis in your work and to make further advances in the field.

Natural scientists perceive and classify organisms primarily on the basis of their appearance and structure- their form , defined as that characteristic remaining invariant after translation, rotation, and possibly reflection of the object. The quantitative study of form and form... change comprises the field of morphometrics. For morphometrics to succeed, it needs techniques that not only satisfy mathematical and statistical rigor but also attend to the scientific issues. An Invariant Approach to the Statistical Analysis of Shapes results from a long and fruitful collaboration between a mathematical statistician and a biologist. Together they have developed a methodology that addresses the importance of scientific relevance, biological variability, and invariance of the statistical and scientific inferences with respect to the arbitrary choice of the coordinate system. They present the history and foundations of morphometrics, discuss the various kinds of data used in the analysis of form, and provide justification for choosing landmark coordinates as a preferred data type. They describe the statistical models used to represent intra-population variability of landmark data and show that arbitrary translation, rotation, and reflection of the objects introduce infinitely many nuisance parameters. The most fundamental part of morphometrics-comparison of forms-receives in-depth treatment, as does the study of growth and growth patterns, classification, clustering, and asymmetry. Morphometrics has only recently begun to consider the invariance principle and its implications for the study of biological form. With the advantage of dual perspectives, An Invariant Approach to the Statistical Analysis of Shapes stands as a unique and important work that brings a decade's worth of innovative methods, observations, and insights to an audience of both statisticians and biologists.

Data collected in psychiatric longitudinal studies is often very complex, and simple statistical methods do not work well. More advanced statistical methods are required but are difficult to apply without appropriate training in statistics. This book presents an overview of these... statistical methods for the analysis of correlated data in psychiatric clinical trials and observational studies. The approach is as non-technical as possible, with minimal mathematics and lots of examples from published studies in psychiatry, neuroscience and mental health. Code in SAS and R for the implementation of the methods will be provided as a web supplement.

Many trials in the social, behavioral, medical and health sciences involve hierarchical data structures with subjects nested within clusters. Multilevel models should be used for this kind of data and it is important that the optimal design is chosen to maximize statistical power.... This book presents an overview of power and sample size calculations for trials of this type. It covers multiple types of trials, including cluster randomized trials, multisite trials, individually randomized group treatment trials and longitudinal intervention studies.
