This collection is vibrant and varied. It is rich and uplifting throughout with the love of life, people and the spirit of place permeating the lines. Twenty-five new poems from Hazel Menehira's years in Far North Queensland nestle into selected ones retrieved from her sixty yea...rs as a published Antipodean writer and teacher, many of those years spent in Wanganui, New Zealand, where Hazel is well-known as a journalist, speech and drama teacher, stage director, actor, author, poet, playwright and speech adjudicator. "If readers are moved, to smile, chuckle, reflect upon, think, philosophise or re-read any of these poems I could ask for nothing more - oh, except to continue writing such lines." Hazel Menehira "Beyond a Time" is a companion book to Hazel's book of short stories, "Below a Time". The books have been published concurrently by Jabiru Publishing.

Jenny and Doug Lawton were two schoolteachers who loved their jobs, and had a wonderful family of three boys and a happy family home. As their sons were growing up and becoming independent, Jenny and Doug could see a new era in their lives approaching. They took up the challenge ...of Doug's dream to 'buy a boat and sail away' and turned it into a reality. It took common sense, careful planning and hard work, but led to amazing experiences and unforgettable places and people. This is their story of ten years spent in their yacht, Swifty - three years of learning, followed by seven years of cruising adventures.

If, as he left his native Kenya to study forestry at Oxford, you had told Rob Ryan that five years later he would be settling in Alice Springs as the Australian Government's minerals geologist, he would have questioned your sanity. He had not even heard of Geology! But that is wh...at happened, and this is the story of how it happened. It is also the story of his lifelong supporter - his Kenyan high school girlfriend and wife, Judy - and their families, and of the vicissitudes of a geologist's life in outback Australia: the characters, the challenges, and the long separations that a geologist's family may have to endure. It is also a story of the unrelenting search for minerals to replace those that the human race consumes at a huge rate in order to survive and without which the planet could not sustain the population that it does. This search has taken the author from the rainforests of Borneo to the deserts of Egypt; and from the luxury home of a Minister in the government of the Shah of Iran in Teheran to a ceremonial welcome in Fiji.

Much has been written about the Militia soldiers who fought on the Kokoda Trail and other areas of New Guinea in World War II, particularly about how they were considered to be badly trained and unwilling fighters. While the Militia came to be known as "Chocos", short for Chocola...te Soldiers, as it was believed they would melt in the heat of battle, the events in New Guinea tell a different story of bravery and steadfastness. Cheerio, Don tells the story of one Militia soldier and his training, as well as the mad rush to defend Australia's eastern shore after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and landed in Malaysia. It was a time when invasion of Australia by the Japanese was believed to be imminent. The people of Australia did fear invasion, and the "scorched earth" policy was taken very seriously, with men allocated to burn down homes as the people fled the Japanese soldiers. This book is based on Don Mitchell's letters home to his family and his diaries about family life on their farm at Coraki, in northern New South Wales, Australia, during World War II.

This is not the work of a travel writer, but it does seem to be the work of a destination writer. And the destinations are revealed less for their sights and experiences, for which travellers usually travel, but for the unforeseen amusements, ironies, surprises and absurdities by... which the author finds himself surrounded. And though the reader may continually smile, the author has not set out to write a book of jokes. The citizens of his destinations are not trying to be funny or ironic, and the author is not creating amusements. He is merely reporting the oddities that seem to be constantly distracting him from the academic purpose of his being in that destination. The precision of the author's language - the straight-faced reporting - contributes much to the witty result. In reporting the surprising social and linguistic behaviours of many developing countries, he is rarely critical of the people responsible for them; it is when he reminds us of comparable lapses in the developed world - especially his own Australia - that he can be disapproving. Yet, whatever the context, the reader will chuckle, if not actually chortle. Sometimes he sidesteps into his own language and plays upon words in escapades in which the language-loving reader will be delighted. In Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Europe, America or home in Oz, the distractions arise often in communication - addresses, notices, and especially the press - where quite serious intent comes across to this writer as absolute hilarity. His best example is a press item from Africa, the headline of which provides his book's title.

This collection teems with life, amazing characters and humour. Storylines vary: credible, somewhat strange, close to crime, speculative, beyond any square, and even bizarre. A third of the short stories (most have 1000-1500 words, perfect for coffee-break reading) are new, unpu...blished ones written during Hazel Menehira's years in Far North Queensland, Australia. They sit comfortably within the themed sections of selected favourites retrieved from her sixty years as a professional Antipodean writer and teacher, many of which were spent in Wanganui, New Zealand, where Hazel is well-known as a journalist, drama teacher, speech adjudicator, author, poet, actor and stage director.

Imagine if you saw Jesus on the cross. How would you feel if you were only twelve years old at the time? This is what happened to Antonietta Allotta. In the vision, Jesus told Antonietta about events that would occur in her life. They all came true! Since that first experience, ...Antonietta has had many more dreams and visions, often telling her about things that would happen in the future. Sometimes these were tragic events, such as the death of her first husband. Somehow, through her faith, Antonietta has come to terms with these life-changing experiences, and even today, she continues to have dreams and visions. This is Antonietta's extraordinary story.
