This volume documents the emergence of design anthropology, the convergence of two disciplines that has informed an emerging transdisciplinary field which draws from both. Rather than a subfield of either anthropology or design, design anthropology is a unique practice and theore...tical approach that explores new modes of knowledge production and enables new forms of participatory engagement. Design anthropologists create the conditions for zones of experimentation and improvisation, bringing those who are being served and/or affected directly into a design process in which existing conditions, places, and things are collectively mapped, visualized, and reimagined to consider possible alternative futures. This convergence of anthropological and designerly practice is explicitly interventionist and transformative: anthropology moves beyond description while design moves beyond pre-formulated solutions. Design anthropologists challenge the dominant perspective of innovation as a novel idea, thing or object by focusing instead on the new and unique arrangements and assemblages that are made possible by innovation. Design anthropology challenges the notion of technological determinism by engendering new forms of participatory design that collectively envision possible futures and foster cultural change by reorganizing the way things might be.
