Throu...gh interviews with Maori students, their teachers and whanau, the authors learnt about the characteristics of teachers that made a difference. They have drawn these together into the Effective Teaching Profile. Listening to culture: Maori principles and practices applied to support classroom management Angus H. Macfarlane The Hikairo Rationale is an approach to behaviour management which encapsulates an amalgam of contemporary theory and traditional Maori discipline. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding the nature of classroom management, and locates culture at the centre of this framework. The rationale has its roots in a study of a special school which values inclusion and listens to culture, in its quest to facilitate and maintain a secure, democratic, and positive classroom environment. Praising Maori children: Getting it right Veronica Butterworth and Jill Bevan-Brown This article shows that generating nga- ara whakamihi (praise pathways) through a context of praise enabled Ma-ori students to feel safe and supported, both culturally and educationally, and that they were able to assimilate and then integrate the meaning of teacher praise. This book examines decolonisation and Maori education in Aotearoa New Zealand in ways that seeks to challenge, unsettle and provoke for change. Editors Jessica Hutchings and Jenny Lee-Morgan have drawn together leading Maori writers and intellectuals on topics that are at the ...heart of a decolonising education agenda, from tribal education initiatives to media issues, food sovereignty, wellbeing, Christianity, tikanga and more. A key premise is that colonisation excludes holistic and Maori experiences and ways of knowing, and continues to assert a deep influence on knowledge systems and ways of living and being, and that efforts to combat its impact must be broad and comprehensive. The book presents a kaupapa Maori and decolonised agenda for Maori education. The writers put kaupapa Maori into practice through a purakau (narrative) approach to explore the diverse topics in a range of styles.

The main assumptions behind the voucher approach to education are that consumer (parental) choice and provider competition will improve education, and increase its efficiency. These claims are evaluated in the light of international and New Zealand research on education systems.

A summary of the main report Competent children at 10: Families, early education, and schools. The first three stages of the Competent Children research project looked at the study children at ages 5, 6, and 8. This next stage measures their performance at age 10 when they were i...n their fifth school year. Because the study has followed the children over five years it has been possible to look at the relationships of earlier experiences and resources to children's current competency levels. Among these are: early childhood education ; family income levels and changes in these over time ; changes in families ; how children initially took to school ; how they used their time, such as their use of mathematics in the home, or how long they spent watching television. The analysis included some of the things that the children experienced at age 10, such as their out-of-school activities, and their feelings about home and school. The study also points to ways in which children can be helped to make progress and to the importance of quality adult:child interactions.
