Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English - Applied Geography, grade: very good, University of Applied Sciences, Joanneum (-), 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Australia with its six states and its two territories is the remotest of the s...ettled continents. The name Australia comes from the Latin expression Terra Australis Incognita, which simply means Southern land. It was originally part of the ancient continent of Gondwanaland. Australia emerged as a separate continent about 100 million years ago, when Antarctica broke away and drifted southwards. Australia is still a moving island. The first Europeans in Australia were almost certainly the Portuguese. The first confirmed visit was undertaken by the Dutch in 1616. In the following years Great Britain sent their convicts to Australia. In total, Britain transported 130.000 convicts to Australia also for the most trivial crimes. There were about 300.000 Aborigines in Australia when the Europeans arrived. Today about 200.00 Aborigines live in Australia. The major cities of Australia are Sydney, which is the largest city, Canberra, which is the capital of Australia and Melbourne. The Australians are very friendly, outgoing and informal people. It's easy to come into contact with them and you won't have problems to finding a way to handle them in business deals. Australia is a federal parliamentary democracy, an independent self-governing state and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The constitution is based on the British parliamentary traditions; the head of the state is the British sovereign.Australia is very rich in natural resources and also has a large industry. Today, agriculture accounts for only 3 percent of the GDP, the gross domestic product. The most important economy factor is the service sector, first of all the financial service sector which accounted in the 1990s for more than 60 percent of the Australian gross domestic product. But also, tourism has

Project Report from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Bayreuth, language: English, abstract: Language is the very life-breath of being Maori Looking at this quotation from the Maori Language Commission th...e impression is created that language is the most important elixir for the Maoris and also their culture. However, is this elixir, Te Reo Maori, still alive or has the English language suffocated it? With the colonisation of New Zealand by Great Britain the Maoris had to face several severe changes in their language use and their culture. These changes include, among other things, the shift in the language of communication from Te Reo Maori to English and the displacement of Maori tribes from their native land. Language death, and hence also cultural death, would have been the worst case. But with the help of the New Zealand Government Te Reo Maori and the culture of the Maoris is experiencing a unique revival. Nevertheless, Te Reo Maori has also had a permanent influence on the English language. It was most influential during the first years of colonisation and now again in the period of revitalisation. Similarly, other languages have had an influence on New Zealand English and particularly on the language situation in New Zealand. More than 180 languages have been spoken or understood by New Zealanders in 2006 and this number might have increased by now. In spite of this large number of languages being spoken or understood, hardly any policies for languages exist though a necessity for such a policy is more than present. The aim of this essay is to have a detailed look at the people of the Maori and the influence they had on the English spoken in New Zealand as well as to analyse the current language situation, including existing language policies, in New Zealand. In order to do this, the people and the culture of the Maori will be described at first and after that the influences Euro

As is the case in various other industries, this industry also has realised that it is easier and considerably cheaper to retain existing customers instead of attracting new customers in an ongoing process. Various tools of the CRM spectrum are currently being utilised and this report presents these, including a comparison which organisation appears to have the most successful and most promising strategy in terms of CRM. After identifying the main players in the industry, this report will analyse what can be done in relation to CRM within this industry. The next section concentrates on challenges that arise for organisations willing to utilise CRM tools before detailing which CRM strategy each company appears to be using. Finally, a comparison of the different CRM strategies as well as an outlook will be provided, additionally offering recommendations to organisations that operate within this industry.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: This paper will examine the works of some Australian female colonial poets, who, in contrast to male authors, have... critically examined their situation in their writings and in this way offered a realistic view on life in Australia at the time. To begin with, the culturally specific concepts of femininity and masculinity in literature are to be inspected and how the male myth is embodied in the bush legend. The essay examines the contemporary Australian literary production and analyses the role of women authors. Secondly, the function and role of poetry for the feminist movement in literature will be demonstrated. Although women's prose has received more attention than their poetry has, and prose writers were central to literary culture, I chose to focus on poetry, since it has been suggested that poetry tended to exhibit the clearest record of the feminist movement. Since many female writers turned to fiction, as poetry was considered men's territory, women poets had to struggle against male attitudes. The essay will research the circumstances of female productions, how they were reviewed by fellow writers and which obstacles women poets had encountered. Although journals do not relate directly to this topic, I feel motivated - due to the fact that poetry was especially dependent on periodical publications - to call attention especially to the significance of The Dawn, opposed to the Bulletin. Furthermore, the main aim of this paper is to illustrate the thematic range that was relevant to female poetry. The question of which themes and motifs had preoccupied their verse will be discussed. Main themes such as marriage, love, independence, loneliness, religion and the potential for future female influence will be illustrated in poems by authors such as Louisa Lawson, Ada Cambridge, Emma Anderson, Carol

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Institut f r Anglistik), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine phonological reflexes of British va...rieties in AusE focusing on the question of which British variety influenced AusE the most. In order to approach this issue, it is necessary to adduce a theoretical framework: firstly, I will sketch the history and evolution of AusE by means of Schneider's Dynamic Model (2007) in order to clarify how and under which influences AusE evolved. Due to the utmost importance of the historical development of AusE with respect to its phonology, I will devote a proper chapter for this part. Additionally, I will provide a rough overview of Australia's present demographic situation focusing on its cultural diversity and the people's ancestries emphasizing Australia's British roots. These preliminary theoretical considerations support and eventually lead to the third chapter which deals with the main issue of this paper, namely the analysis of the extent of phonological reflexes of British varieties in AusE. For this purpose, I will, firstly, examine every single vowel of AusE providing the respective phonetic descriptions as well as an account of potential similarities and differences concerning English dialects of the British Isles. Afterwards, I will discuss the most distinctive consonantal features of AusE and analyze if and to what extent they can be identified in BrIEs. At last, I will focus on a certain prosodic feature that AusE and BrIEs have in common. Taking all the outcomes into consideration, the analysis shall result in a substantial and reliable account of to what extent phonological traces of the different British varieties can still be identified in AusE.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: -, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne (Swinburne University of Technology), language: English, abstract: A substantial and influential literat...ure demonstrates conflicting evidence that director remuneration is either positively or negatively correlated with corporate performance. In some instances, studies suggested to have no link between director remuneration and corporate performance. Research interest in this topic has been further fuelled with the collapse of many multinational companies such as Lehmann Brothers, Meryll Lynch during the recent global financial crisis. Prior Australian studies, also present a mixed opinion on the link between director remuneration and firm performance. In this research, a re-examination of the link between director remuneration and firm performance in the big four Australian banks is being conducted. Various literature sources such as government reports, journal articles and newspaper articles have been reviewed to acknowledge pervious research findings and help identify a sizeable gap. This research uses both financial data and non-financial data in analysing the various hypothesis presented. Financial data is retrieved from databases such as Aspect Fin Analysis and banks' annual report. In terms of non-financial data, this paper retrieves them from various newspaper articles discussing job cut and branch closures. Overall this research has found that there exists no relationship between director remuneration and firm performance in the big four banks for the period pre, during or post Global Financial Crisis. These findings also hold true with a one year lag and lead and goes on to suggest that the relationship between the variables (director remuneration and performance) does not forge a link in the long term as well.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Bamberg, course: Australian English, language: English, abstract: This paper will study the flapping /t/ as it is today and its possible evolution in t...he nearer future in General Australian English. Australian English (AusE), as it is today, is an English accent that counts with own and also shared features when compared to other variants of English. One of the phenomena that can be encountered in AusE is the realization of a flapped or tapped /t/ allophone (Honeybone 3), a tap alveolar, which is a quality that can easily be perceived when hearing Australians speak. After thoroughly revising English linguistic books though, it is remarkable that few authors appoint this phonetical process to also being part of AusE, but rather of American or Irish English nature among others; some do actually talk about this phenomenon as being also present in English spoken in the southern hemisphere, but they usually don't specify in which territories, which does not help the reader to find enough information about this specific subject when needed. Furthermore, Some AusE linguists seem to ignore this phenomenon when writing their research papers. Opportunely, there are a few authors who do correlate this as also being an AusE feature. This being said, their investigation will be taken as a starting point for further research on this subject. The study to follow will target to get enough information about the flapping /t/ in AusE, trying to focus as much as possible in General AusE, by pointing out what it is, how it emerged and what is the current status of the phenomenon, in order to later on be able to compare these pieces of information with an own research on the ongoing situation based on recordings, which will then lead us to answer to the main question of this paper: What possible development can we expect from the flapping /t/ phenomenon in A
