Figuring explores the complexities of love and the human search for truth and meaning through the interconnected lives of several historical figures across four centuries--beginning with the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, and ending with ...the marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, who catalyzed the environmental movement. Stretching between these figures is a cast of artists, writers, and scientists--mostly women, mostly queer--whose public contribution have risen out of their unclassifiable and often heartbreaking private relationships to change the way we understand, experience, and appreciate the universe. Among them are the astronomer Maria Mitchell, who paved the way for women in science; the sculptor Harriet Hosmer, who did the same in art; the journalist and literary critic Margaret Fuller, who sparked the feminist movement; and the poet Emily Dickinson. Emanating from these lives are larger questions about the measure of a good life and what it means to leave a lasting mark of betterment on an imperfect world: Are achievement and acclaim enough for happiness? Is genius? Is love? Weaving through the narrative is a set of peripheral figures--Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Walt Whitman--and a tapestry of themes spanning music, feminism, the history of science, the rise and decline of religion, and how the intersection of astronomy, poetry, and Transcendentalist philosophy fomented the environmental movement.

Would you know how to aid a person suffering from cardiac arrest or an unexpected seizure? When we least expect it, we may witness scenarios in which someone is in danger. Knowing how to react quickly becomes a matter of life or death. [English translation of title: Practical Gui...de to First Aid] First aid is not only essential in extreme cases. Minor accidents (cuts, scrapes, burns, animal stings or bites) and day-to-day ailments (headaches or allergic reactions) should be addressed with equal care, and knowing how to treat them and what to avoid is key. This practical guide to first aid is essential, accessible and up-to-date with the latest techniques, both basic and advanced. It includes an outline of what to have in your first aid kit at home or on-the-go, as well as detailed chapters that address particular ailments and scenarios such as: seizures, concussions, asphyxiation, hallucinations, sharp abdominal pain, high fever, electrocution, heat stroke, hypoglycemia, intoxication, cardiac arrest, loss of consciousness, bone fracture, ocular damage, and allergic reactions, among others. Finally, it includes a section on prevention: how to provide emotional and psychological support to the affected, how to avoid making decisions that may worsen a critical situation, how to decrease the incidence of accidents in bathrooms and kitchens, and more.

*A New York Times Bestseller* By the one-time federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, an important overview of the way our justice system works, and why the rule of law is essential to our survival as a society. Preet Bharara has spent much of his life examining... our legal system, pushing to make it better, and prosecuting those looking to subvert it. Bharara believes in our system and knows it must be protected, but to do so, he argues, we must also acknowledge and allow for flaws both in our justice system and in human nature. Bharara uses the many illustrative anecdotes and case histories from his storied, formidable career--the successes as well as the failures--to shed light on the realities of the legal system and the consequences of taking action. Inspiring and inspiringly written, Doing Justice gives us hope that rational and objective fact-based thinking, combined with compassion, can help us achieve truth and justice in our daily lives. Sometimes poignant and sometimes controversial, Bharara's expose is a thought-provoking, entertaining book about the need to find the humanity in our legal system as well as in our society.

An exceptional collection that gathers, for the first time, in a single volume, all of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short stories. [Translation of title into English: Complete Short Stories] Packaged into a single volume are forty-one essential stories that showcas...e the career of the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien anos de soledad) and that constitute an impressive legacy for universal literature. The reader will find the early stories of Garcia Marquez collected within Eyes of a Blue Dog, which includes Monologue of Isabel Watching It Rain in Macondo , the famous text that laid the foundations of Macondo, the vast universe --both imaginary as it was real-- that would end up becoming the most powerful literary space of our time. The birth of Macondo served as the inauguration of the magical realism era, personified by characters immersed deep in the dense and tropical landscape of the Caribbean. From this stage onwards, what followed were a series of stories that showed Garcia Marquez in full command of his narrative talent: Big Mama's Funerals ( Los funerales de la Mama Grande ), which recounts the lavish funeral of the authentic sovereign of Macondo, and The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother ( La increible y triste historia de la candida Erendira y su abuela desalmada ). The most recent collection of his short stories, titled Twelve Pilgrim Tales (Doce cuentos peregrinos) take the reader to old Europe to tell us about the fate of Latin American immigrants, of their melancholy and their tenacity.

One of the most beloved classics of Spanish literature, referred to by Miguel de Cervantes as a book, in my opinion, divine. Now available from Vintage Espanol. When towards the end of the XV century a young law student at the University of Salamanca, Spain --Fernando de Rojas--w...rote La celestina, little did he know that he was creating a literary masterpiece, a work that would confer him immortality. For much of his life he kept a low profile because the Inquisition was relentless in its persecution of heretics. The least indiscretion could have caused him loss of reputation, property, and even his life. Humorous and ribald in its language, La celestina (known in English as The Comedy of Calisto and Melibea) is a continuous dialogue between masters and servants. Through the characters' dialogue much of the Spanish soul of those times has been revealed and learned, and by extension, of the human condition. La celestina is considered to be one of the greatest works of all Spanish literature, and is usually regarded as marking the end of the medieval period and the beginning of the renaissance in Spanish literature.
