When Valentina Tereshkova blasted off aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963, she became the first woman to rocket into space. It would be nineteen years before another woman got a chance--cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982--followed by American astronaut Sally Ride a year later. By... breaking the stratospheric ceiling, these women forged a path for many female astronauts, cosmonauts, and mission specialists to follow. Women in Space profiles twenty-three pioneers from around the world, including Eileen Collins, the first woman to command the space shuttle; Peggy Whitson, who orbited aboard the International Space Station for more than a year; and Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. Readers will also learn about the Mercury 13, American women selected by NASA in the late 1950s to train for spaceflight. Though they matched and sometimes surpassed their male counterparts in performance, they were ultimately denied the opportunity to head out to the launching pad. Their story, and the stories of the pilots, physicists, and doctors who followed them, demonstrate the vital role women have played in the quest for scientific understanding.

Cocaine smuggling, shoot-outs, murder and never-ending decadent parties. Matt Sorum's Double Talkin' Jive could almost be described as the autobiographical equivalent of the film Blow . But rather than becoming one of the United States' premier drug smugglers, Matt Sorum becomes ...a world famous drummer in bands such as Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, and the Cult. Sorum dropped out of high school to become a drummer, but turned to selling pot to support himself, later transitioning to smuggling large quantities of cocaine. When Sorum is suddenly given the chance to play in the Cult, he is finally able to make a living as a drummer. He is asked to replace Steven Adler in Guns N' Roses the very next year. With that, Matt's life is transformed. He is involved in the creation of two of rock's most legendary albums: Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 . But, not long after that, Axl starts turning up at the recording studio more and more sporadically, sometimes not at all, and during the following world tour, serious problems emerge. Matt recounts in keen detail how he and the band stagger toward their downfall. Matt and his Guns N' Roses band mates Slash and Duff McKagan form Velvet Revolver with Dave Kushner, and their 2004 debut record, Contraband , tops the Billboard charts. When singer Scott Weiland suddenly leaves the band, Matt steps in as drummer for Motoerhead during their US tour, and then starts his own all-star band, Kings of Chaos. During his time as a professional drummer, Matt battles alcohol and coke addictions, but meeting his girlfriend, Ace Harper, helps him manage to go clean. The couple marry in Palm Springs in 2013 and, just two years later, Matt becomes the drummer in super group Hollywood Vampires. Matt Sorum's autobiography, written with writer duo Leif Eriksson and Martin Svensson, avoids all the usual rock biography cliches. There is no posing here-just a brutal honesty which involves daring to be reckless, even toward yourself.

Designed for teachers, parents, or homeschoolers searching for new ways to motivate students aged 9--12, this illustrated resource provides a short mini-lesson for each activity, giving educational background information, related lingo, a materials list, step-by-step directions, and guidance for extending the activity. The wide range of activities-from exploring the physics of parachute flight to making homemade ink to testing how pollutants affect plants-ensures every learner's interest will be piqued.

Stephen Rosenfield, founder and director of the American Comedy Institute, the premier comedy school in the United States, has taught literally dozens of major standup comics in North America, and has also pioneered comedy as an academic discipline in many universities, a trend t...hat is rapidly spreading. Mastering Stand-Up draws on Rosenfield's own extensive experience (and those of countless stars like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Rodney Dangerfield, Louis C.K., Steve Martin, Roseanne, and Johnny Carson) to show the reader--and would-be comic--what works, what doesn't, and why. Forty sharply written chapters cover every conceivable angle of the joke and how to tell it. There are a number of books on comedy and how to do it, but none has the breadth and authority Rosenfield brings to his theme. It's not for nothing that the New York Times has described him as -probably the best-known comedy teacher in the country.- Rosenfield's book is sure to become the classic text on its subject. And it should help thousands who long to make others laugh to realize their fondest hopes.
