Microalgae can be future resource for industrial biotechnology In current energy crisis era, microalgae are under tremendous research focus for the production of biodiesel due to their high photosynthetic efficiency, growth rate and high lipid content compared to territorial plan...ts. However, the large-scale production of algal biomass and downstream processing of harvested algae towards bio-fuels are facing several challenges from economic viability perspective. Apart from bio-fuels, the microalgae synthesize number of bio-molecules such as pigments (e.g., chlorophyll, carotenoid), protein (e.g., lectin, phycobiliprotein), and carbohydrates (e.g., agar, carrageenan, alginate, fucodian) which are available in the various forms of microalgal products. Therefore, developing a strategy for large-scale production and use of algal biomass for the co-production of these value-added macromolecules is thus imperative for the improvement of the economics of algal biorefinery. In the above context, this book covers three major areas (i) commercial-scale production of bio-molecules from microalgae, (ii) sustainable approach for industrial-scale operation, and (iii) optimization of downstream processes. Each of these sections is composed of several chapters written by the renowned academicians/industry experts. Furthermore, in this book, a significant weightage is given to the industry experts (around 50%) to enrich the industrial perspectives. We hope that amalgamate of fundamental knowledge from academicians and applied research information from industry experts will be useful for forthcoming implementation of a sustainable integrated microalgal biorefinery. This book highlights following. Explores biomolecules from microalgae and their applications Discusses microalgae cultivations and harvesting Examines downstream processing of biomolecules Explores sustainable integrated approaches for industrial scale operations Examines purification techniques specific for microalgal pro

The book starts with an introduction to DTS, its functioning and possible applications. This is followed by a description of the available fiber optic cables, their construction, installation methods and testing. Various testing methods are discussed and the advantages and disadv...antages of each are given. The next topic is a discussion of the application of the DTS systems in a utility environment. In particular, possible placement of the fiber optic cable is described and the advantages of each method of installation are elaborated on. A full chapter is devoted to the explanation of the cable ampacity (current rating) calculations and how the measured fiber temperature is used to obtain the dynamic cable rating information in real time. A brief description of the leading RTTR suppliers, including verification methods they used before introducing their products to the market is offered. Finally, future applications of the DTS technology in other aspects of power system operation are discussed.

Oil spills are a serious marine disaster. Oil spill accidents occur usually in shipping, ports and offshore oil development. Although most of them are emergent events, once an oil spill occurs, it will cause great harm to the marine ecological environment, and it will also bring ...direct harm to the economic development along the affected coast as well as human health and public safety. Information Engineering of Emergency Treatment for Marine Oil Spill Accidents analyzes the causes of marine oil spill accidents, introduces China's emergency response system for marine oil spills, discusses the technologies such as remote sensing and monitoring of oil spill on the sea surface and oil fingerprint identification, studies model prediction of marine oil spill behavior and fate and emergency treatment technologies for oil spills on the sea surface, and emphatically introduces the emergency prediction and warning system for oil spills in the Bohai Sea and oil-spill-sensitive resources and emergency resource management system . Features: The status quo and causes of marine oil spill pollution, as well as hazards of oil spill on the sea were described. The emergency response system for marine oil spills were detailed. The model-based prediction methods of marine oil spills were described. A series of emergency treatment of oil spill on the sea were used and developed. This book serves as a reference book for scientific investigators who need to understand the key technologies for emergency response to marine oil spill accidents, including the current level and future development trend of China in this field.

This volume presents the theory of control systems with sliding mode applied to electrical motors and power converters. It demonstrates the methodology of control design and the original algorithms of control and observation. Practically all semiconductor devices are used in powe...r converters, that feed electrical motors, as power switches. A switching mode offers myriad attractive, inherent properties from a control viewpoint, especially a sliding mode. Sliding mode control supplies high dynamics to systems, invariability of systems to changes of their parameters and of exterior loads in combination with simplicity of design. Unlike linear control, switching sliding mode control does not replace the control system, but uses the natural properties of the control plant system effectively to ensure high control quality. This is the first text that thoroughly describes the application of the highly theoretical control design approach to synchronous drives in practice. It examines in detail the different features of various types of synchronous motors and converters with regard to sliding mode control design. It further presents a detailed analysis of control issues and mechanical coordinate observation design for various types of synchronous motors, of power converters, and various drive control structures. It also discusses the digital implementation of control, observation and identification algorithms. The potential of sliding mode control and observation are moreover demonstrated in numerical and experimental results from real control plants. This work is intended for professionals and advanced students who work in the field of electric drive control. It is also recommended to experts in control theory application, who work with sliding modes for the control of electrical motors and power converters.

This book is an advanced graduate textbook on power system stability and control. As it is the third edition, it augments the material in the previous editions with additional topics which have gained significance in recent years. This includes a rewritten overview of power syste...m stability, a section that explores the industry convention of q axis leading d axis in modeling of synchronous machines, as well as a chapter that details the modeling and representation of two widely used FACTS devices in the bulk transmission network. The third edition also provides content involving simulations that utilize digital computers and commercial simulation tools, an introduction to the concepts of the stability analysis of linear systems, and a heavily revised chapter that explores both implicit and explicit integration methods for transient stability. By going in-depth on these and other critical topics, the authors allow practicing engineers to use the book as an invaluable reference for incorporating the presented techniques and methods into their projects.

What are the limits for well-designed building performance models? Should we move away from the modelled versus measured debate and instead use models to compliment, not replace, real energy performance data? Building performance models and simulation play an increasingly importa...nt role in our investigations of building energy performance. Even with a welcome growth in real empirical data of building energy use, our understanding of climate change adaptation, low-carbon refurbishments and many aspects of building design can be improved through appropriate use of building models. However, all too often a combination of poor models and/or poor modelling can give a misleading impression of how a building is actually performing. This unique book takes a critical approach to current building modelling practice, and the way these models are interpreted. A wide range of real models and actual building performance data are analysed to reveal some novel uses of building performance simulation that are sensitive to the limitations of applying theory to practice. Readers are given modelling and calculation exercises, as well as case studies, to illustrate these techniques in action. The use of steady-state, dynamic, and transient models is examined to provide a valuable new perspective on energy modelling for professionals and students of building modelling, energy efficiency, building design, and architecture.
