On a winter's night in July 2012, Kathy and Ralph Kelly received a phone call no parent should ever have to answer. It was the Emergency department of a Sydney hospital, telling them that their eldest son Thomas had been in an altercation and that they were to come at once. Thoma...s had been coward punched by a total stranger within two minutes of getting out of a taxi in Kings Cross, on his way to a private 18th birthday party of a friend. Two days after that first phone call Kathy and Ralph were told that their son had suffered catastrophic head injuries resulting in brain death. They were advised that there was no other option but to switch off his life support. He was 18 years old. In the aftermath of their son's death, Kathy and Ralph became the public face of the campaign to end the drunken violence that plagued Sydney's major nightspots. Along with Premiers Barry O'Farrell and Mike Baird they helped institute the lock out laws that have been a major factor in the reduction of alcohol related deaths and injuries in Darling Harbour, Kings Cross and Sydney's CBD. They were also instrumental in creating Take Kare Safe Spaces ('Kare' with a 'K' after Thomas's initials) for young people in key nightspots, which has now registered over 52,000 interventions since December 2014, what the Kellys call 'sliding door moments', the difference between a young person's life continuing on as normal or degenerating into something terrible. And they were one of the driving forces behind the introduction of tougher sentencing for 'coward-punch' deaths. But their campaigning created a huge toll on their family. Online intimidation, death threats and false news about the mishandling of donations came from those with a stake in the clubs and businesses who were the lock out laws financial losers. When Stuart Kelly, Thomas's younger brother, went for his first night at University of Sydney's St Paul's College, Ralph and Kathy believe the bullying he experienced because of the family's

Philanthropy and the Arts documents an emerging model of philanthropy that moves beyond the fundraising process to capture the essence of philanthropy in the intrinsic values held by donors, benefactors and philanthropic leaders. These values are the same as those that the arts b...ring to society, so the act of philanthropy itself embodies a commitment to ensuring the arts deliver for Australia a better community in which to live. Philanthropy and the Arts contains stories of successful philanthropy in the arts and acknowledges the relevant research in fundraising and philanthropy, translating this into the tools required for effective practice. While focusing on The Australian Ballet in particular, it has application across all art forms and arts companies and the non-profit sector more broadly.

The Horse Rescuer (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

            By Baker, Candida

The inspiring story of an orphaned young runaway who devotes her life to saving damaged horses, and along the way manages to save herself. The feelgood and utterly inspirational story of a remarkable woman and how her life was transformed by her love of horses. Amanda Vella was a... young horse-loving girl from country NSW who was only seven years old when she lost her mother to cancer. Later, her father died when she was fourteen - he committed suicide. Not yet fifteen years old, in a desperate attempt to avoid foster care, Amanda ran away to the Gold Coast, where she ended up living on the streets until a kindly school principal gave her a caravan to live in. While she was still at school, she worked three jobs to get by. But Amanda always had big dreams and a love of horses, and while she was still at school she used her own money to rescue two horses. From little things, big things grow...Now Amanda Vella has a degree, has married her childhood sweetheart and has survived breast cancer. She's also the 2015 Young Queenslander Entrepreneur of the Year. Her Save a Horse Australia (SAHA), which she founded, is now a fully registered horse rescue and rehabilitation centre based in Queensland. The organisation has been running for over 10 years, and its goal is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected, unwanted and slaughter bound horses, giving them a second chance at life and love then adopting them out under life time adoption contracts. To date, SAHA has rescued over 700 horses to date, has established two rescue centres in Queensland, and has over 174K Facebook fans. A heartwarming and inspiring story of how one young woman, driven by her tenacity, determination and a deep affinity with horses, is making a huge difference.

The Most Good You Can Do: How Effective Altruism Is Changing Ideas aboutLiving Ethically (Trade Paperback / Paperback)

            By Singer, Peter

Peter Singer, often described as the world's most influential living philosopher, presents a challenging new movement in the search for an ethical life, one that has emerged from his own work on some of the world's most pressing problems. Effective altruism involves doing the mos...t good possible. It requires a rigorously unsentimental view of charitable giving, urging that a substantial proportion of our money or time, should be donated to the organisations that will do the most good with those resources, rather than to those that tug the heartstrings. Singer introduces us to an array of remarkable people who are restructuring their lives in accordance with these ideas, and shows how, paradoxically, effective altruism often leads to greater personal fulfilment.
