Was Governor FitzRoy the man popular history would have us believe? Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy's tenure as Governor of New South Wales and Governor-General of Australia between 1846 and 1855 was plagued by rumour. Mention FitzRoy and he is either not remembered at all, remember...ed as the Governor who caused his wife's death or as a shameless womaniser. Are these damning comments justified? It was the time of Wentworth, Parkes and Lang, giant political figures in New South Wales' early history. FitzRoy's administration oversaw matters such as settlement of the contentious crown land issue and squatters' rights, discovery of gold, education and introduction of the railway. A man of the British Empire, he served firstly his King, then a young Queen Victoria as the Crown's Vice Regal representative at Prince Edward island, the Leeward Islands and finally, New South Wales. This commissioned biography portrays FitzRoy in a light not previously considered, from a personal, family oriented aspect, stretching from childhood to the battlefields of Waterloo. Going beyond the rumours set in motion in 1847, it reveals a worldly diplomat, a Governor who encouraged those around him to act on their beliefs.

As you climbed the rickety stairs of an old woolshed at Sydney harbour in 1944, the sound of beeping would become almost deafening. Rows of men and women in uniforms and headsets would be tapping away vigorously at small machines, under the careful watch of their young female tra...iners. Presiding over the cacophony was a tiny woman, known to everyone as 'Mrs Mac', one of Australia's wartime legends. Violet McKenzie was the first Australian woman to study electrical engineering, and she was a pioneer in the early days of radio. As the clouds of war gathered in the 1930s, she defied conventions and trained young women in Morse code, foreseeing that their services would soon be sorely needed. Always a champion of women, she even persuaded the navy to set up a new defence force for women, the WRANS. Mrs Mac was adored by the thousands of young women and men she trained, and she came to be respected by the defence forces and the public too for her vision and contribution to the war effort. David Dufty brings her inspiring story back to life for readers today. '[An] incredible and inspiring life... Duffy's new biography captures her unwavering dedication in the face of adversity.' - Professor Genevieve Bell, Australian National University 'A cracking story about the famous Australian radio engineer you've never heard of.' - Dick Smith, entrepreneur and philanthropist

An engaging, lively, provocative and, above all, inspiring memoir from one of our home-grown, unsung feminist heroes, Merle Thornton, who has lived a life full of daring, defiance and activism. Merle Thornton is one of Australia's most delightful, formidable and game-changing pio...neering feminists - a woman who through her daring and defiance helped bring about positive change for generations of Australian women. In her most audacious act, in 1965 she chained herself to the bar at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane to protest against the law that excluded women from public bars in Queensland, bringing about the end of segregated drinking in that state. The bar in the hotel is now called 'Merle's Bar.' But that's just one achievement, in a life full and rich in defiance, daring and determination. Warm, funny, rollicking - this is a memoir that is powerfully relevant to all women now.

In the First World War of 1914-1918, thousands of boys across Australia and New Zealand lied about their age, forged a parent's signature and left to fight on the other side of the world. Though some were as young as thirteen, they soon found they could die as well as any man. Li...ke Peter Pan's lost boys, they have remained forever young. These are their stories. This extraordinary book captures the incredible and previously untold stories of forty Anzac boys who fought in the First World War, from Gallipoli to the Armistice. Featuring haunting images of the boys taken at training camps and behind the lines, these tales are both heartbreaking and rousing, full of daring, ingenuity, recklessness, random horror and capricious luck. A unique perspective on the First World War, THE LOST BOYS is military history made deeply personal, a powerful homage to youthful bravery and a poignant reminder of the sacrifice of war.

Unconquered tells the remarkable story of a group of men and women from Australia and New Zealand who fought and conquered extraordinary challenges from the battlefield to the sporting arena. These veterans of the Army, Navy and Air Force served their country in campaigns from So...malia to Afghanistan and the multitude of conflicts in between, and share the common scars of their service, both apparent and invisible. For these men and women, now confronting the trials of daily life, the Invictus Games provided a further challenge, a chance to test their mettle in the sporting arena representing the country for which they had fought. `Invictus' is the Latin word for `unconquered' or `undefeated' - a perfect description of these veterans who now fight their own personal battles. Through the power of sport, they have proven that they can overcome the mental and physical trauma inflicted by their service. This beautifully illustrated volume allows us to share their story of service, sacrifice and courage, and gain an insight into their dogged determination to triumph in the face of adversity. Unconquered: Our Wounded Warriors is a deeply personal and human account of the trauma of armed conflict and the suffering that continues long after the sounds of battle have died away. It highlights the power of the individual to overcome fear, wounds both mental and physical, and lifelong disability and inspires those of us who have never served to cope with our own challenges. These are stories of courage pure and simple and of the men and women who defied the odds to remain unconquered.
