            Buru Island: A Prison Memoir

Buru Island: A Prison Memoir (PDF ebook)

Edited by Hersri, Setiawan; Jennifer, Lindsay

Buru Island was the site of Indonesia's most remote and infamous prison camp. In the wake of the 1965 repression of the political Left, between 1969 and 1979, approximately 12,000 men were held on Buru without formal charge or trial. During their detention prisoners suffered tort...ure, forced labour and malnourishment, as well as social isolation. As a young writer filled with hope and optimism for Indonesia's future he joined the left-wing cultural organisation Lekra (Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat, Institute of People's Culture) and was a permanent representative of the Indonesian National Committee to the Asia-Africa Writer's Bureau in Colombo. Setiawan shares an intimate account of his life story leading up to and during his detention. In beautifully crafted prose he brings into stark light the horrors of the period after 1965, which included disappearance, murder, torture, betrayal and loss and his own capture and incarceration on Buru Island.

By the Seat of My Pants is Dean Smith's story of his life as a flying cadet in WWI, an airmail pilot in the 1920's and, lastly, as the lead aviator in Admiral Byrd's 1928 Antarctic expedition. Told in a self-deprecating style with a matter of fact sense of humor, it is an engagin...g read from start to finish. Passages describe airmail runs heading West with no maps or runways available, and Smith's interesting take on the Byrd Expedition is a version of events not in the official records. Indeed, Smith claims his log-diary, which mysteriously went missing once the party returned stateside, was most likely stolen by Byrd himself lest it conflict with his narrative of the expedition.

What do you do when you reach rock bottom? Matt Calman's most consistent tool for dealing with problems throughout his life was alcohol. But it got to the stage where he was no longer willing to put up with the dark side of his drinking. So he quit. But the problems that had been ...simmering away for most of his life merely came to a head. It led to a major depressive phase with panic attacks and thoughts of suicide. Finally Matt began the slow climb to rebuild himself. He was ready to find something. It just happened to be the Coast to Coast Multisport World Championships, the toughest endurance race in New Zealand. The Longest Day outlines Matt's path back from depression, his struggles to learn to run, cycle and kayak at an elite level and the culmination of all that training: his Coast to Coast race. Through his training he learns about process rather than outcome, and how true success and enjoyment is embedded in the journey not the destination. This is a riveting read for sports fans and a compelling account of courage and determination.

Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine

Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine (EPUB ebook)

            By Yates, Brock

Ferrari means red. It means racing. Excellence, luxury, and performance.Less well-known is the man behind the brand. For nearly seventy years, Enzo Ferrari dominated a motor-sports empire that defined the world of high-performance cars. Next to the Pope, Ferrari was the most rever...ed man in Italy. But was he the benign padrone portrayed by an adoring world press at the time, or was he a ruthless despot, who drove his staff to the edge of madness, and his racing drivers even further?Brock Yates's definitive biography penetrated Ferrari's elaborately constructed veneer and uncovered the truth behind Ferrari's bizarre relationships, his work with Mussolini's fascists, and his fanatical obsession with speed. "A fascinating and provocative book" The Observer.
