The Role of English Teaching in Modern Japan examines the complex nature of Japan's promotion of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In globalized societies where people with different native languages communicate through English, multicultural and multilinguistic interactions a...re widely created. This book takes the opportunity to look at Japan and examines how these multiple realities have affected its English language teaching within the domestic context. The myth of Japan's racial and ethnic homogeneity may hinder many Japanese in recognizing realities of its own minority groups such as Ainu, Zainichi Koreans, and Brazilian Japanese, who are in the same EFL classrooms. Acknowledging a variety of English uses and users in Japan, this book emphasizes the influence of Japan's recent domestic diversity on its EFL curriculum and urges that such changes should be addressed. It suggests new directions for incorporating multicultural perspectives in order to develop English language education in Japan and other Asian contexts where English is often taught as a foreign language. Chapters include: * Social, cultural, and political background of Japan's EFL education * Race, ethnicity, and multiculturalism * Representations of diversity in Japanese EFL Textbooks * Perceptions of English learning and diversity in Japan * The role of EFL education in multicultural Japan

Second Language Learning and Language Teaching provides an introduction to the application of second language acquisition research to language teaching. Assuming no previous background in second language acquisition or language teaching methods, this text begins by providing read...ers with a concise background in second language acquisition research. The text continues on to offer an examination of how people learn particular aspects of the second language, including grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and the strategies they adopt in their learning. Final chapters look at second language learning in a broader context - the goals of language teaching and their roots in SLA research. This newly updated fifth edition builds on the comprehensive scope of earlier editions while also addressing more recent developments in the field, particularly language assessment, the linguistic landscape and multicultural approaches to language teaching.

Teaching in Two Languages: Plural Identities and Classroom Practice

This book is an ethnographic study of linguistic and social practices in a bilingual Corsican school. Drawing on traditions of research in linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistic studies of classroom discourse and power, the emphasis of the book is on the way the interactiona...l order of the classroom articulates with the wider social, political and sociolinguistic context. Alexandra Jaffe does not take bilingualism to be a self-evident category or goal, but rather, looks at the way that school practices embody and promote particular images of what it means to be a bilingual person or society. She develops a notion of imagined competence to describe the way that some pedagogical practices in school project and ascribe linguistic identities on apprentice speakers. The book is also centrally concerned with processes of social and linguistic change, and how the introduction of a minority language like Corsican into the school constitutes and potentially reconfigures social and linguistic identities and relationships. In this book, the bilingual school emerges as a nexus where conservative forces jostle with innovative new practices that make the school a site for potential ideological change. The most significant of these possible changes involves a shift towards plural language ideologies, or aaC--zpolynomie . In this class, they are intimately bound up with a cooperative model of citizenship which is the basis for a moral and interactional order in which plural language use and competence is validated. Both a landmark ethnography and a major contribution to theory, this book is essential reading for all those wanting to keep up to date with advances in bi/multilingualism and sociolinguistics.

Sociolinguistic Research: Application and Impact provides a dynamic and unique overview for researchers and advanced students undertaking research projects within the area of sociolinguistics and shows how this research can have practical applications beyond an academic audience,... and have a clear impact upon professional practice and people's lives. There is an increasing push within academia that research at all levels have a practical application and real-world impact and it is now a significant criterion for most funding bodies. Anyone undertaking research in sociolinguistics must address such questions as: How can sociolinguistics adapt to this? What steps could be taken to make the discipline more relevant outside academia? How can public engagement with sociolinguistic research be facilitated? This book will answer these questions and shows researchers how their own research can become more outward facing. Featuring chapters from established and emerging scholars such as Mary Bucholtz, John R. Rickford, and Walt Wolfram and including sociolinguistic research from Europe, Asia, and North America, this book includes: * chapters that showcase contemporary and cutting edge sociolinguistic research which have had practical and real world applications * case studies from a range of professional fields including criminal justice, education, language policy-making, workplace communication, asylum seeker assessment, and migrant integration * the various methods of gaining user and public involvement, from running community workshops for migrant groups, organising stalls at county fairs, facilitating school student participation in education projects, and ensuring influence in professional practice Sociolinguistics Research: Application and Impact is essential reading for sociolinguistic researchers and students embarking on research in this area.

Addressing a wide range of issues in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and multilingualism, this volume focuses on language users, the 'people.' Making creative connections between existing scholarship in language policy and contemporary theory and research in other social s...ciences, authors from around the world offer new critical perspectives for analyzing language phenomena and language theories, suggesting new meeting points among language users and language policy makers, norms, and traditions in diverse cultural, geographical, and historical contexts. Identifying and expanding on previously neglected aspects of language studies, the book is inspired by the work of Elana Shohamy, whose critical view and innovative work on a broad spectrum of key topics in applied linguistics has influenced many scholars in the field to think out of the box and to reconsider some basic commonly held understandings, specifically with regard to the impact of language and languaging on individual language users rather than on the masses.
