The term mechatronics was coined in 1969, merging mecha from mechanism and tronics from electronics, to reflect the original idea at the basis of this discipline, i.e., the integration of electrical and mechanical systems into a single device. The spread of this term, and of mech...atronics itself, has been growing in the years, including new aspects and disciplines, like control engineering, computer engineering and communication/information engineering. Nowadays mechatronics has a well-defined and fundamental role, in strict relation with robotics. Drawing a sharp border between mechatronics and robotics is quite impossible, as they share many technologies and objectives. Advanced robots could be defined as mechatronic devices equipped with a smart brain , but there are also up-to-date mechatronic devices, used in tight interaction with humans, that are governed by smart architectures (e.g., for safety purposes). Aim of this book is to offer a wide overview of new research trends and challenges for both mechatronics and robotics, through the contribution of researchers from different institutions, providing their view on specific subjects they consider as hot topics in both fields, with attention to new fields of application, new challenges to the research communities and new technologies available. The reader of this book will enjoy the various contributions, as they have been prepared with actual applications in mind, along a journey from advanced actuators and sensors to human-robot interaction, through robot control, navigation, planning and programming issues. The book presents several state-of-the-art solutions, like multiple-stage actuation to cope with conflicting specification of large motion-spans and ultra-high accuracy, model-based control for high-tech mechatronic systems, modern approaches of software systems engineering to robotics, humanoids for human assistance, etc. The reader can find also new techniques in approaching the design of mechatronic sys

Comics: An Introduction provides a clear and accessible introduction to the Comics form - including graphic narratives and a range of other genres - with sections explaining key terms, history, theories and major themes. The book uses a variety of examples to show the rich histor...y as well as the current cultural relevance and significance of Comics. Taking a broadly global approach, Harriet Earle discusses the history and development of the form internationally, as well as how to navigate comics as a new way of reading. Earle also pushes beyond the book to lay out the ways that fans engage with their comics of choice - and how this can affect the industry. Two final chapters take a close-up look at how Comics can work for social change and political comment. Chapters on Journalism and Life Writing looks at how the coming together of word and image give us new ways to discuss our world and ourselves. A glossary and further reading section help those new to Comics solidify their understanding and further their exploration of this dynamic and growing field.

With the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the business world, a new era of Business Intelligence (BI) has been ushered in to create real-world business solutions using analytics. BI developers and practitioners now have tools and technologies to create systems and sol...utions to guide effective decision making. Decisions can be made on the basis of more reliable and accurate information and intelligence, which, can lead to valuable, actionable insights for business. Previously, BI professionals were stymied by bad or incomplete data, poorly architected solutions, or even just outright incapable systems or resources. With the advent of AI, BI has new possibilities for effectiveness. This is a long-awaited phase for practitioners and developers, and moreover, for executives and leaders relying on knowledgeable and intelligent decision making for their organizations. Beginning with an outline of the traditional methods for implementing BI in the enterprise and how BI has evolved into using self-service analytics, data discovery, and most recently AI, AI Meets BI first lays out the three typical architectures of the first, second, and third generations of BI. It then takes an in-depth look at various types of analytics and highlights how each of these can be implemented using AI-enabled algorithms and deep learning models. The crux of the book is four industry use cases. They describe how an enterprise can access, assess, and perform analytics on data by way of discovering data, defining key metrics that enable the same, defining governance rules, and activating metadata for AI/ML recommendations. Explaining the implementation specifics of each of these four use cases by way of using various AI-enabled machine learning and deep learning algorithms, the book provides complete code for each of the implementations, along with the output of the code, supplemented by visuals that aid in BI-enabled decision making. Concluding with a brief discussion of the cognitive

Virtual Reality is not real life. Instead it is life-like creations using computer-generated scenarios. Human behavior is replicated in virtual scenarios, where every detail is controlled by computers, and in situations that can be repeated under the same conditions. Based on tec...hnology and design, the user can experience presence. In the virtual world, users are embodied in avatars that represent them and are the means to interact with the virtual environment. Avatars are graphical models that behave on behalf of the human behind them. The user avatar is a proxy that also backs interaction with others, allowing computer-mediated interactions. Analyses directed to understand people's perceptions, personal and social behavior in computer mediated interactions, comprise a multidisciplinary area of study that involves, among others, computer science, psychology and sociology. In the last two decades a number of studies supported by Virtual Reality have been conducted to understand human behavior, in some cases the implications of the technology, or to reproduce artificial human behavior. This book presents a collection of studies from recognized researchers in the area.
