Soldier-scholar David Kilcullen shows what opponents of the West have learned during the last quarter-century of conflict. Just a few years ago, people spoke of the US as a hyperpower - a titan stalking the world stage with more relative power than any empire in history. Yet as e...arly as 1993, newly appointed CIA director James Woolsey pointed out that although Western powers had 'slain a large dragon' by defeating the Soviet Union in the Cold War, they now faced a 'bewildering variety of poisonous snakes'. In this book, Killcullen explains what happened to the 'snakes' (non-state threats, including from terrorists and guerrillas) and the 'dragons' (state-based competitors such as Russia and China). He explores how enemies learn under conditions of conflict, and examines how Western dominance over a very particular, narrowly defined form of warfare has forced adversaries to adapt in ways that present serious new challenges to America and its allies. State and non-state threats have increasingly come to resemble each other, Kilcullen argues, with states adopting non-state techniques and non-state actors now able to access levels of precision and lethal weapon-systems once only available to governments. A counterintuitive look at this new, vastly more complex environment, The Dragons and the Snakes not only reshaped our understanding of the West's enemies' capabilities, but also shows how we can respond, given the increasing limits on US power.

Last year was a 'red year' - massacres and beheadings, fallen cities, collapsed and collapsing states, the unravelling of a decade of foreign policy and military strategy. We saw the rise of ISIS, the splintering of what seemed a viable government in Iraq, and foreign fighters - ...many from Europe, Australia and Africa - flowing into Syria at a rate ten to twelve times that during the height of the Second Iraq War. In David Kilcullen's words, 'What the hell happened?' In this essential essay he calls on twenty-five years' experience, as a student, researcher and occasional practitioner of guerrilla warfare and counterterrorism, in an effort to answer that question. He draws on new interviews with war-affected communities and combatants, and data from his own research and that of others. He seeks to make sense of today's crisis within a broader strategic and historical context, and to answer questions such as: What are the roots and causes of the global jihad movement? What is ISIS? Where did it come from? What threats does it pose to Australia? What does the current chaos in the international environment say about the effectiveness of Western counterterrorism strategy since 9/11, and what might a coherent future strategy look like? 'My driver pulls up to a luxury resort in the Empty Quarter. It's early morning. We've been driving fast since well before dawn, from Abu Dhabi. Now we're very near the Saudi border, and the dunes have been getting bigger all the way: by now, they're hundreds of feet tall. Over the last mile we've been penetrating a series of security layers. Helicopters come and go from a landing zone over the crest, sniffer teams are crawling over the complex, and you can hear attack dogs barking from the checkpoint, half a mile out, where police search your car and luggage. The resort has been chosen because its remoteness makes it possible to isolate the place ...' - David Kilcullen

In his third book, David Kilcullen takes us out of the mountains: away from the remote, rural guerrilla warfare of Afghanistan, and into the marginalised slums and complex security threats of the world's coastal cities, where almost 75 per cent of us will be living by mid-century....

This Field Manual establishes doctrine (fundamental principles) for tactical counterinsurgency (COIN) operations at the company, battalion, and brigade level. It is based on lessons learned from historic counterinsurgencies and current operations. This manual continues the effort...s of FM 3-24, Counterinsurgency, in combining the historic approaches to COIN with the realities of today's operational environment (OE)- an environment modified by a population explosion, urbanization, globalization, technology, the spread of religious fundamentalism, resource demand, climate change and natural disasters, and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. This manual is generic in its geographic focus and should be used with other doctrinal sources.
