Safety, Culture and Risk: The Organisational Causes of Disasters (EPUB ebook)

              By Hopkins, A.

Safety management in the workplace is an issue of critical importance to business managers as well as those responsible for OHS in any organisation. However, although the concepts of safety, culture and risk have become increasing matters of concern and are often discussed, they ...are concepts that are not often clearly understood. This new book from Professor Andrew Hopkins focuses on these concepts, and deals with the complex issues in a clear, informative style that will both inform organisations and companies, and assist them to be better able to create safe environments for their employees and clients, and to mitigate risk.

Nightmare Pipeline Failures - Fantasy Planning, Black Swans and Integrity Management

Nightmare Pipeline Failures - Fantasy Planning, Black Swans and Integrity Management (EPUB ebook – 1st edition)

              By Hayes, J.; Hopkins, A.

The worst nightmares of the oil and gas pipeline industry are coming true in the United States. High-pressure natural gas pipelines run underground through many suburban areas as part of the network providing fuel to homes and businesses. This infrastructure poses an immense, but... insufficiently recognised, threat to the general public. In 2010, one of these pipelines ruptured in San Bruno, a suburb of San Francisco adjacent to the international airport. The result was a massive explosion and fire in which eight people died, many were injured, and 38 homes were destroyed. This possibility haunts many cities around the world. Coincidentally in the same year, another worst-case scenario came true, near Marshall, in the state of Michigan. A pipeline rupture released vast quantities of oily sludge into a local river system. The smell was so offensive that many nearby residents were forced to sell their homes and get out. The clean-up cost the pipeline owner more than a billion dollars, making it the most expensive oil spill on land in US history. This book examines the causes of these two events. It argues that, although they were profoundly surprising to the companies concerned, from a broader perspective they were no surprise at all, stemming as they did from well-known human, organisational and regulatory failures.

Lessons From Gretley: Mindful Leadership And the Law (EPUB ebook – 1st edition)

              By Hopkins, A.

Are you responsible for safety in your organisation? Following on from the highly respected Lessons from Longford: The Esso Gas Plant Explosion and Lessons from Longford: The Trial, this book explores the 1996 Gretley mine disaster in NSW and its OHS implications. Written by prem...ier OHS author Professor Andrew Hopkins, the book proposes the view that effective OHS law must hold the top corporate leaders responsible when something goes seriously wrong, regardless of whether they were personally at fault.

Lessons from Longford: The Trial (EPUB ebook)

              By Hopkins, A.

Like Lessons from Longford: The Esso Gas Plant Explosion, this essential companion was written following the Esso gas plant explosion at Longford, Victoria, in 1998, and examines both the new legal requirements that came about as well as the trial, which was the first ever OHS tr...ial to be held in a supreme court. It is important reading for anyone involved in Work Health and Safety because it addresses a number of important questions, including: Why did the Judge say so emphatically "What happened was no mere accident"? Are OHS offences crimes? How effective was Esso's defence strategy? What does "practically preventable" mean? Why did Esso not blame its control room operators at the trial, when it has blamed them at the Royal Commission? Did the trial produce any findings about the causes of the disaster? Would Esso have been at risk of conviction under the corporate manslaughter legislation which was proposed for Victoria?

Quiet outrage: The way of a sociologist (EPUB ebook)

              By Hopkins, A.; Tillman, H.

Meet Andrew Hopkins: sociologist, storyteller, academic. His books about man-made disasters - gas plant accidents, oil well blowouts, train crashes, coal mine explosions - are best-sellers, read by audiences the world over. His books have been described by reviewers as page turne...rs of scholarly thoroughness. By his own admission, this book is "idiosyncratic" - first, he explains what led him to write books about disasters in the way he did. Second, he discusses the role of academics in bringing about social change and third, he suggests that sociologists should address people outside their discipline, and that hazardous industries and their regulators should look to sociology for input. Read the story behind the storyteller and why Andrew Hopkins' sense of quiet outrage about corporate negligence has contributed to making the world of work safer.
