'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.' Drunken Mr Jones of Manor Farm has neglected his livestock for too long. In a burst of insurgent fervour they rise up and he is deposed, with the pigs taking charge of the newly named Animal Farm. Everything ru...ns smoothly, productivity soars, and all animals are well-fed and happy. But the further away the memory of the revolution, the more distant seem its ideals-and when Boxer the workhorse is betrayed, the horrifying extent of the pigs' corruption is revealed. Orwell's 'fairy story', a scathing satire of Soviet communism, is as potent now as it was in 1945. Animal Farm is one of literature's most electrifying examinations of power and corruption.

Animal Farm is regarded in the literary field as one of the most famous satirical allegories of Soviet totalitarianism. Orwell based the book on events up to and during Joseph Stalin's regime. Orwell, a democratic socialist, and a member of the Independent Labour Party for many y...ears, was a critic of Stalin, and was suspicious of Moscow-directed Stalinism after his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. The plot is an allegory in which the pigs in a farm play the role of the Bolshevik revolutionaries and overthrow and oust the human owners of the farm, setting it up as a commune in which, at first, all animals are equal. The other characters have their parallels in the real world, but care should be taken with these comparisons as they do not always match history exactly and often simply represent generalised concepts. The novel was chosen by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell (1903-1950), was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language, and a belief in democratic socialism. In addition to his literary career Orwell served as a police officer with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from 1922-1927 and fought with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1937. He was severely wounded when he was shot through his throat. Orwell and his wife were accused of 'Rabid Trotskyism' and tried in absentia in Barcelona, along with other leaders of the POUM, in 1938. However by then they had escaped from Spain and returned to England. Between 1941 and 1943, Orwell worked on propaganda for the BBC. In 1943, he became literary editor of the Tribune, a weekly left-wing magazine. He was a prolific polemical journalist, article writer, literary critic, reviewer, poet and writer of fiction, a

The kitchen grew dirtier and the rats bolder, though we trapped a few of them. Looking round that filthy room, with raw meat lying among refuse on the floor, and cold, clotted saucepans sprawling everywhere, and the sink blocked and coated with grease, I used to wonder whether th...ere could be a restaurant in the world as bad as ours. Down and Out in Paris and London is one of the great accounts of life in the underclass: of being hard-up and hungry, of sleeping in seedy hostels and working in squalid restaurants. George Orwell's first book-published in 1933, when he was not yet thirty-is alive with the sights and smells of poverty. It is a revelatory memoir of surviving at the margins.

As he lay dying, George Orwell summoned his publisher Fred Warburg to his bedside. No longer capable of holding a pen, the writer dictated a message to the public about the world of his new novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. 'Don?t let it happen,? he concluded. 'It depends on you.?In a...n age of inescapable surveillance, fake news, alternative facts, would-be Big Brothers and endless low-level wars, Orwell?s warning still speaks to us today, and with greater force than ever before.Republished with a new introduction by Dennis Glover, author of The Last Man in Europe, Orwell?s prophetic masterpiece is truly a story for our times. Orwell?s courage and his refusal to be silenced inspire hope that, ultimately, the spirit of humanity will win through.

              By Orwell, George

Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side, he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last gl...ass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs. Jones was already snoring.
