In the present volume James Robinson completes his trilogy, which deals with the history of divine healing in the period 1906-1930. The first volume is a study of the years 1830-1890, and was hailed as a standard reference for years to come. The second book covers the years 1890-...1906, and was acclaimed as a monumental achievement that combines careful historical scholarship and a high degree of accessibility. This volume completes the study up to the early 1930s and, like the other two works, has a transatlantic frame of reference. Though the book gives prominence to the theology and practice of divine healing in early Pentecostalism, it also discusses two other models of healing, the therapeutic and sacramental, promoted within sections of British and American Anglicanism. Some otherwise rigorous Fundamentalists were also prepared to practice divine healing. The text contributes more widely to medical and sociocultural histories, exemplified in the rise of psychotherapy and the cultural shift referred to as the Jazz Age of the 1920s. The book concludes by discussing the major role that divine healing plays in the present rapid growth of global Christianity. Robinson's work is intriguing and insightful. . . . Tracing connections between historical figures and those they influenced in such a way that historical roots shed light on current ideas and practices. --Craig Keener, Professor of New Testament, Asbury Theological Seminary, Kentucky A good read crammed with larger than life characters brought vividly to life, Robinson's account . . . is masterly. --Andrew Walker, Emeritus Professor of Theology, Culture, and Education, King's College, UK Scholars of Christianity will welcome this final installment in James Robinson's comprehensive history of the transatlantic divine healing movement. By elucidating the integral connections between divine healing and the emerging pentecostal movement from 1906 -1930, Robinson sheds light on the theologies and practices that cont

Description: In the present volume, James Robinson shows how the Holiness movement contributed to the rise of Pentecostalism, with emphasis on those sectors that practiced divine healing. Although other scholars have undertaken to explore this story, Robinson's treatment is by fa...r the most thorough examination to date. He draws productively on the burgeoning secondary literatures on Pentecostalism and healing, and brings to light frequently overlooked, yet revealing primary sources. The events narrated are fascinating in their own right, and are important to the histories of Pentecostalism and healing for how they clarify the processes by which divine healing was pursued, debated, and often disparaged. The text also contributes to larger medical and social histories, offering tantalizing glimpses of the roots of some of today's most popular and contested medical and religious responses to sickness and health. Endorsements: This is another fine volume from James Robinson, following on Pentecostal Origins and Divine Healing: The Formative Years. Here he sheds new light on how developments within evangelicalism in the area of divine healing . . . helped shape Pentecostalism. Robinson has produced an exciting book on an important topic--one of continuing relevance. His work combines careful historical scholarship and a high degree of accessibility. --Ian Randall, Senior Research Fellow, International Baptist Theological Seminary The Holiness Movement of the later nineteenth century generated a ferment surrounding the doctrine of healing by faith in the atonement. By the helpful technique of a series of detailed vignettes, James Robinson traces the course of opinion on the subject. The result is an illuminating study on the powerful influence of this body of thought on the emergent Pentecostal Movement at the opening of the twentieth century. --David Bebbington, Professor of History, University of Stirling James Robinson's second volume in a promised trilogy on divine he

After the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, the civil rights movement was in need of others to champion the cause. It was during this time that Skip Robinson, a black man in his early thirties, came bursting onto the scene. Skip Robinson was able to talk in a way t...hat everyone could relate to, and he was able to lead people into action, including demonstrations, boycotts, and marches throughout the Deep South. In this biography written by his brother, James (Jim) Robinson, readers get a front-row seat to the struggle for justice and equality during what some people call the third revolution in America. Skip Robinson's life should serve as motivation to continue the fight to end the final vestiges of racial discrimination in America. About the Author James (Jim) Robinson grew up with twelve siblings on a farm in Mississippi. He was a math and music teacher for fifteen years before moving on to become a car salesman in order to support his growing family of a wife, four sons, and one daughter. He has a longtime interest in the trees and plants of the Southeast United States and often planted trees in his spare time.
