The term biodiversity, at its simplest, refers to the variety of species inhabiting Planet Earth. More recently, academics, scientists, the corporate and public sectors have started to interpret biodiversity as embracing ecosystems (the way species interact) and ecosystem service...s (the services provided to the human race by ecosystems, such as pollination, for example). There is now a scientific consensus around the current ongoing crisis in biodiversity arising from both climate change and human activities. Our planet is presently experiencing a sixth period of mass extinction, which is thought to be more severe than those of earlier periods in geological time. As the corporate sector is contributing significantly to this biodiversity crisis, there are many reasons theoretically and practically speaking why companies are accountable for their actions and should actively discharge their accountability regarding biodiversity. This book explores the financial, business risk, ethical, cultural, and emotional rationales underlying the need for companies to actively protect, conserve and improve biodiversity within their sphere of operation. We then investigate the ways in which companies are embracing their biodiversity responsibility through a variety of biodiversity initiatives, with an overarching emphasis on the ways in which they are accounting for biodiversity, in other words, how they are communicating their actions to their diverse stakeholder groups. Throughout the book, the authors provide reflections on the current state of biodiversity accounting as well as make recommendations for future reporting practice.
