A celebration of books, storytelling, and reading from one of the greatest living children's book creators Internationally acclaimed illustrator and author Robert Ingpen spins a fantastic spell in this imaginative book. The illustrations are taken from a massive mural he donated ...to the National Library of Australia in 2018. It depicts a bookshelf without books. Instead, the shelves are filled with characters from classical stories who, through the imagination of the illustrator, are borrowed from the pages of books where they traditionally belong.

Click Go the Shears was probably the most wide pread and enduring of the old-time shearers' songs. It was still frequently to be heard in the sheds of the Western Line of NSW in the last half of the twentieth century. The tune came from an American Civil War song, Ring the Bell, ...Watchman, and was later used for the revival hymn Pull for the Shore, and for a number of temperance anthems, including one from the Salvation Army. The opening verse of Click Go the Shears is a parody of Ring the Bell, written by Henry Lawson, who wrote about the song in his essay 'The Songs They Used to Sing'. Versions don't seem to differ much - the song was first published in written format in 1946 in an article by Percy Jones. The version in this book is as sung by A L Lloyd in the 1950s.

'The Night Before Christmas' was first published in 1823 and is considered as being largely responsible for the conception of Santa Claus from the mid-19th century through to today. The enchanting poem tells the story of a man who, while his wife and children are fast asleep, awa...kens on Christmas Eve to curious noises coming from outside his house. As he looks out of the window he witnesses a sleigh, pulled by eight reindeer, flying high across the sky before landing, to the man's great surprise, on the roof of his very own house. The events that follow mark the beginning of the tradition of Santa Claus and the joy that he brings to children on Christmas night. This new gift edition brings together the traditional poem with stunning new illustrations by the award-winning Australian artist Robert Ingpen, each one a delightful evocation of this eternally popular work.
