A celebration of books, storytelling, and reading from one of the greatest living children's book creators Internationally acclaimed illustrator and author Robert Ingpen spins a fantastic spell in this imaginative book. The illustrations are taken from a massive mural he donated ...to the National Library of Australia in 2018. It depicts a bookshelf without books. Instead, the shelves are filled with characters from classical stories who, through the imagination of the illustrator, are borrowed from the pages of books where they traditionally belong.

Age range 5+ The Tea and Sugar train only came once a week on a Thursday. But the special Christmas train only came once a year. Today was Sunday. Four more days without sugar. Four more days until the Christmas train. Please, please be on time. Please don't be late. Join Kathlee...n in the outback as she eagerly awaits the Christmas Tea and Sugar train. Will she meet Father Christmas? Will she receive a Christmas gift from him? A delightful, heart-warming story from the National Library of Australia that will intrigue, captivate and introduce readers to a slice of the past. Wonderful sensitive illustrations, including a beautiful double fold-out image showing the shops inside all the carriages. For 81 years, from 1915 to 1996, the Tea and Sugar Train travelled from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie once a week. It serviced the settlements along the Nullarbor Plain, a 1050-long rail link. It was a lifeline. There were no shops or services in these settlements. The train carried everything they needed-household goods, groceries, fruit and vegetables, a butcher's van, banking facilities and at one time even a theatrette car for showing films. The biggest excitement for the children was the first Thursday of December every year, when Father Christmas travelled the line. He distributed gifts to all the children on the way, including those of railway workers, those in isolated communities, and station kids.

Click Go the Shears was probably the most wide pread and enduring of the old-time shearers' songs. It was still frequently to be heard in the sheds of the Western Line of NSW in the last half of the twentieth century. The tune came from an American Civil War song, Ring the Bell, ...Watchman, and was later used for the revival hymn Pull for the Shore, and for a number of temperance anthems, including one from the Salvation Army. The opening verse of Click Go the Shears is a parody of Ring the Bell, written by Henry Lawson, who wrote about the song in his essay 'The Songs They Used to Sing'. Versions don't seem to differ much - the song was first published in written format in 1946 in an article by Percy Jones. The version in this book is as sung by A L Lloyd in the 1950s.
