In this book, the authors investigate how digitization can influence environmental and social sustainability. The digital revolution is currently changing the daily lives of billions of people worldwide. It is also disrupting the economy, generating new opportunities and creating... new challenges. Many sustainability researchers and representatives of civil society have been insisting for years that our economic model and consumerist lifestyle need to change to overcome the challenges facing the 21st-century world. Can the much-discussed disruption potential of digitalization be harnessed for this purpose? Smart Green World? provides guiding principles for sustainable digitalization and develops hands-on proposals that show how politicians, individuals, businesses and civil society actors can help achieve it. Can digitalization foster the transition to 100% renewable energy? Do sharing and prosuming transform consumption patterns towards sustainability - or do personalized commercials and an accelerated lifestyle lead to more consumption of things we don't need? How many people will lose their jobs? Who will win and lose in the digital age? This book not only analyses the ecological and economic implications of digitalization; it also shows how we can actively shape the digital future in order to make it a driving force for sustainable social transformation. Providing a clear and practical assessment of the role digitalization can play in a sustainable future, Smart Green World? Making Digitalization Work for Sustainability will be of great interest to students of sustainability and sustainable development, as well as those grappling with sustainability policy and practice in their professional life.

For many small businesses, organisations, clubs, artists, faith groups, voluntary organisations/charities and sole traders, applying the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been like playing a game of Snakes and Ladders . As soon as you move along the board and climb a ...ladder, a snake appears, which takes you right back to where you started. Conflicting advice abounds and there is nowhere for these individuals to go for simple answers all in one place. With the threat of fines seeming around every corner, now more than ever is the time for smaller organisations to get to grips with GDPR so that they can demonstrate their compliance. GDPR: A Game of Snakes and Ladders is an easy to read reference tool, which uses simple language in bite size easily signposted chapters. Adopting a no-nonsense approach, the Regulation is explained so that organisations can comply with the minimum of fuss and deliver this compliance in the shortest timeframe without the need to resort to expensive consultants or additional staff. The book is supported by a variety of easy to follow case studies, example documents and fact sheets. The author signposts warnings and important requirements (snakes) and hints and suggestions (ladders) and also provides a section on staff training and a Game of Snakes and Ladders training slide pack. Additional resources are available on the companion website. This user-friendly book, written by a Data Protection Officer and business management specialist will help you understand the Regulation, where it applies in your organisation and how to achieve compliance (and win at the compliance game).

Swarm intelligence algorithms are a form of nature-based optimization algorithms. Their main inspiration is the cooperative behavior of animals within specific communities. This can be described as simple behaviors of individuals along with the mechanisms for sharing knowledge be...tween them, resulting in the complex behavior of the entire community. Examples of such behavior can be found in ant colonies, bee swarms, schools of fish or bird flocks. Swarm intelligence algorithms are used to solve difficult optimization problems for which there are no exact solving methods or the use of such methods is impossible, e.g. due to unacceptable computational time. This book thoroughly presents the basics of 24 algorithms selected from the entire family of swarm intelligence algorithms. Each chapter deals with a different algorithm describing it in detail and showing how it works in the form of a pseudo-code. In addition, the source code is provided for each algorithm in Matlab and in the C ++ programming language. In order to better understand how each swarm intelligence algorithm works, a simple numerical example is included in each chapter, which guides the reader step by step through the individual stages of the algorithm, showing all necessary calculations. This book can provide the basics for understanding how swarm intelligence algorithms work, and aid readers in programming these algorithms on their own to solve various computational problems. This book should also be useful for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying nature-based optimization algorithms, and can be a helpful tool for learning the basics of these algorithms efficiently and quickly. In addition, it can be a useful source of knowledge for scientists working in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as for engineers interested in using this type of algorithms in their work. If the reader already has basic knowledge of swarm intelligence algorithms, we recommend the book: Swarm Intelligence

The book is a comprehensive cover of the latest developments in the most prevalent imaging modality (X-ray Computed Tomography (CT)) in its latest incarnation: Spectral, Dual-Energy and Photon Counting CT. Disadvantages of the conventional single-energy technique used by CT techn...ology are that different materials cannot be distinguished and that the noise is larger. To address these problems, a novel spectral CT concept has been proposed. Spectral dual-energy CT (DE-CT) acquires two sets of spectral data and spectral Photon Counting CT (PC-CT) detects energy of x-ray photons to reveal additional material information of objects by using novel energy-sensitive, photon-counting detectors. The K-edge imaging may be a gateway for functional or molecular CT. The book covers detectors and electronics, image reconstruction methods, image quality assessments, a simulation tool, nanoparticle contrast agents, and clinical applications for spectral CT.

Putting technology front and centre in our thinking about law, this book introduces Law 3.0: the future of the legal landscape. Technology not only disrupts the traditional idea of what it is 'to think like a lawyer' - as per Law 1.0 - and presents major challenges to regulators ...- reasoning in a Law 2.0 mode. As this book demonstrates, the latest developments in technology offer regulators the possibility of employing a technical fix rather than just relying on rules - introducing Law 3.0). Law 3.0 represents, so to speak, the state we are in and the conversation that we now need to have; and this book identifies some of the key points for discussion in that conversation. Thinking like a lawyer might continue to be associated with Law 1.0 but, from 2020, Law 3.0 is the conversation that we all need to join. And as this book demonstrates, law and the evolution of legal reasoning cannot be adequately understood unless we grasp how significant technology is in shaping both legal doctrine and our regulatory thinking. This is a book for those studying, or about to study, law - as well as others with interests in the legal, political and social impact of technology.

This book focuses on one of the two major topics of data analytics: data visualization, aka, computer graphics. In one place major R systems for visualization are discussed, organized by topic and not by system. Anyone doing data analysis will be shown how to use R to generate an...y of the basic visualizations with the R visualization systems. Further, this book introduces the author's lessR system, which always can accomplish a visualization with less coding than the use of other systems, sometimes dramatically so, and also provides accompanying statistical analyses. Key Features: Presents thorough coverage of the leading R visualization system, ggplot2. Gives specific guidance on using base R graphics to attain visualizations of the same quality as those provided by ggplot2. Offers instruction in the author's visualization system, lessR, which is generally less verbose than ggplot2 and lattice. Inclusion of the various approaches to R graphics organized by topic instead of by system. Presents the recent work on interactive visualization in R.

3D rotation analysis is widely encountered in everyday problems thanks to the development of computers. Sensing 3D using cameras and sensors, analyzing and modeling 3D for computer vision and computer graphics, and controlling and simulating robot motion all require 3D rotation c...omputation. This book focuses on the computational analysis of 3D rotation, rather than classical motion analysis. It regards noise as random variables and models their probability distributions. It also pursues statistically optimal computation for maximizing the expected accuracy, as is typical of nonlinear optimization. All concepts are illustrated using computer vision applications as examples. Mathematically, the set of all 3D rotations forms a group denoted by SO(3). Exploiting this group property, we obtain an optimal solution analytical or numerically, depending on the problem. Our numerical scheme, which we call the Lie algebra method, is based on the Lie group structure of SO(3). This book also proposes computing projects for readers who want to code the theories presented in this book, describing necessary 3D simulation setting as well as providing real GPS 3D measurement data. To help readers not very familiar with abstract mathematics, a brief overview of quaternion algebra, matrix analysis, Lie groups, and Lie algebras is provided as Appendix at the end of the volume.

Collecting and Conserving Net Art explores the qualities and characteristics of net art and its influence on conservation practices. By addressing and answering some of the challenges facing net art and providing an exploration of its intersection with conservation, the book cast...s a new light on net art, conservation, curating and museum studies. Viewing net art as a process rather than as a fixed object, the book considers how this is influenced by and executed through other systems and users. Arguing that these processes and networks are imbued with ambiguity, the book suggests that this is strategically used to create suspense, obfuscate existing systems and disrupt power structures. The rapid obsolescence of hard and software, the existence of many net artworks within restricted platforms and the fact that artworks often act as assemblages that change or mutate, make net art a challenging case for conservation. Taking the performative and interpretive roles conservators play into account, the book demonstrates how practitioners can make more informed decisions when responding to, critically analysing or working with net art, particularly software-based processes. Collecting and Conserving Net Art is intended for researchers, academics and postgraduate students, especially those engaged in the study of museum studies, conservation and heritage studies, curatorial studies, digital art and art history. The book should also be interesting to professionals who are involved in the conservation and curation of digital arts, performance, media and software.
