Billion-dollar fines for Facebook. Cambridge Analytica. Edward Snowden. Apps on our smartphones tracking our every move. Privacy may be a defining issue of our age, but it is also one of the least understood. Our digital world confuses what we know about privacy - what is public,... what is private. Do old ethical and legal norms apply to new, digital media? How did the conditions of privacy become so uncertain that we are unsure about our own right to privacy? What can protect us from allowing corporations, governments, hackers and insidious websites to know more about us than we want them to? Rigorous and engaging, this book examines the minutiae of our digital lives while drawing on a philosophy of ethical and legal frameworks based on the thinking of philosopher Immanuel Kant. With a firm eye on the cutting edge of digital developments, Sacha Molitorisz outlines a robust model of individual consent. Of urgent importance, this book spells out conceptual and practical steps to ensure our shared future is not dystopian. It shows not only that informed privacy is fundamental to us as individuals, but that in the digital world we need an enforceable regulatory framework to secure our relationships with others and to safeguard our democracies.

With the aim of simplifying relational database modeling, Database Modeling Step by Step presents the standard approach to database normalization and then adds its own approach, which is a more simplistic, intuitive way to building relational database models. Going from basics to... contemporary topics, the book opens with relational data modeling and ends with BigData database modeling. A road map follows the evolution in relational modeling and includes brief introductions to data warehousing and BigData modeling. A break-down of the elements of a model explains what makes up a relational data model. This is followed by a comparison between standard normalization, along with a more simplistic intuitive approach to data modeling that a beginner can follow and understand. A brief chapter explains how to use the database programming language SQL (Structured Query Language), which reads from and writes to a relational database. SQL is fundamental to data modeling because it helps in understanding how the model is used. In addition to the relational model, the last three chapters cover important modern topics including denormalization that leads into data warehouses and BigData database data modeling. The book explains how there is not much to logical data modeling in BigData databases as they are often without a schema, which means that BigData databases do not have schemas embedded into the database itself and therefore have no metadata and thus not much of a logical data model. Online bonus chapters include a case study that covers relational data modeling and are available at the author's web site: www.oracletroubleshooter.com/datamodeling.html

Synchronization and Title Sequences proposes a semiotic analysis of the synchronization of image and sound in motion pictures using title sequences. Through detailed historical close readings of title designs that use either voice-over, an instrumental opening, or title song to o...rganize their visuals-from Vertigo (1958) to The Player (1990) and X-Men: First Class (2011)-author Michael Betancourt develops a foundational framework for the critique and discussion of motion graphics' use of synchronization and sound, as well as a theoretical description of how sound-image relationships develop on-screen.

The human face is perhaps the most familiar and easily recognized object in the world, yet both its three-dimensional shape and its two-dimensional images are complex and hard to characterize. This book develops the vocabulary of ridges and parabolic curves, of illumination eigen...faces and elastic warpings for describing the perceptually salient features of a face and its images. The book also explores the underlying mathematics and applies these mathematical techniques to the computer vision problem of face recognition, using both optical and range images.
