The study of nonlinear optimization is both fundamental and a key course for applied mathematics, operations research, management science, industrial engineering, and economics at most colleges and universities. The use of linear programming software for microcomputers has become... widely available. Like most tools, however, it is useless unless the user understands its applications and purpose. The user must ensure that the mathematical input accurately reflects the real-world problem to be solved and that the numerical results are correctly used. Therefore, the mathematical modeling framework is critical to setting up and solving mathematical programming problems. The world is mostly nonlinear and students should begin early learning the techniques to solve problems modeled by nonlinear optimization. Rapidly changing technologies evidenced by the use of graphing calculators and enhanced computer software systems (MAPLE) enable the student to be exposed to these topics earlier than before. Mathematics is its own language. As such, mathematics is numerical, graphical, and analytical. We present the concepts in several ways to foster this understanding. The presentation is fully exposed and entirely self-contained.

Introduction to Nonparametric Statistics presents the theory and practice of non-parametric statistics with an emphasis on motivating principals. The course is a combination of traditional rank-based methods and more computationally-intensive topics like density estimation, kerne...l smoothers in regression, and robustness. Most of the techniques described in this book apply to data with only minimal restrictions placed on their probability distributions, but performance of these techniques, and the performance of analogous parametric procedures, depends on these probability distributions. Conceptual developments in this text are intended to be independent of the computational tools used in practice, but analyses used to illustrate techniques developed in this book will be facilitated using the program R. Key Features: Strong focus on foundational issues Focus on both rank-based and more modern techniques Homework problems based on real data Supplemental tools for computation in both R This book is intended to accompany a one-semester graduate-level course in nonparametric statistics.

'Beguiling ... Olsson is evocative on curiosity as an appetite of the mind, on the pleasure of glutting oneself on knowledge' New York Times Simone Weil: philosopher, political activist, mystic - and sister to Andre, one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth cen...tury. These two extraordinary siblings formed an obsession for Karen Olsson, who studied mathematics at Harvard, only to turn to writing as a vocation. When Olsson got hold of the 1940 letters between the siblings, she found they shared a curiosity about the inception of creative thought - that flash of insight - that Olsson experienced as both a maths student, and later, novelist. Following this thread of connections, The Weil Conjectures explores the lives of Simone and Andre, the lore and allure of mathematics, and its significance in Olsson's own life.

Can a sense of belonging increase life satisfaction? Why do we sometimes feel lonely? How can we sustain lasting human connections? The Psychology of Belonging explores why feeling like we belong is so important throughout our lives, from childhood to old age, irrespective of cul...ture, race, or geography. With its virtues and shortcomings, belonging to groups such as families, social groups, schools, workplaces, and communities, is fundamental to our identity and wellbeing, even in a time where technology has changed the way we connect with each other. In a world where loneliness and social isolation is on the rise, The Psychology of Belonging shows how meaningful connections can build a sense of belonging for all of us.

The aim of this book is to incorporate Marshallian ideas such as external increasing returns and monopolistic competitions into the general equilibrium framework of Walrasian tradition. New chapters and sections have been added to this revised and expanded edition of General Equi...librium Analysis of Production and Increasing Returns (World Scientific, 2009).The new material includes a presentation of equilibrium existence and core equivalence theorems for an infinite horizon economy with a measure space of consumers. These results are currently the focus of extensive studies by mathematical theorists, and are obtained by an application of an advanced mathematical concept called saturated (super-atomless) measure space. The second major change is the inclusion of a simple toy model of a liberal society which implements the difference principle proposed by J Rawls as a principle of distributive justice. This new section opens up a possibility to connect theoretical economics and political philosophy.Thirdly, the author presents the marginal cost pricing equilibrium and discusses welfare properties of the external increasing returns, which also belong to Marshall/ Pigou tradition of the Cambridge school. Finally, a new mathematical appendix treats basics of singular homology theory. Although the fixed point theorem is originally a theorem of algebraic topology, most economic students know its proof only in the context of the differentiable manifold theory presented by J Milnor. Considering the significance of the fixed point theorem and its playing a key role in general equilibrium theory, the purpose of this new appendix is to provide readers with the idea of a proof of Brower's fixed point theorem from the 'right place'.This volume will be helpful for graduate students and researchers of mathematical economics, game theory, and microeconomics.

Over the past decade, the field of image processing has made tremendous advances. One type of image processing that is currently of particular interest is tomographic imaging, a technique for computing the density function of a body, or discontinuity surfaces of this function. To...day, tomography is widely used, and has applications in such fields as medicine, engineering, physics, geophysics, and security. The Radon Transform and Local Tomography clearly explains the theoretical, computational, and practical aspects of applied tomography. It includes sufficient background information to make it essentially self-contained for most readers.
